ARCHIE”  Lead Pencil Drawing .  500mm x 500mm. text

I had always avoided drawing ‘fluffy’ animals in detail but this exhibition gave me the opportunity to try. I decided to draw our pet Border Collie / Kelpie Archie in lead pencil; having rediscovered the medium this year drawing the Far North series mainly in pencil

“THE BLACK DOG”  Charcoal, collage and pill cases.

Winston Churchill referred his bouts of depression as being his ‘Black Dog’. I wanted to highlight a social issue that affects many people but is still ignored or not recognized even in our society today.

Working in the ‘loose’ medium of charcoal I drew a black dog and then researched the array of anti depressant drugs available. This became the background collage. Actual pill cases then adorned the floor beneath. It sold on opening night to a worker In mental health and now hangs in her office. It was also nominated for inclusion in the 2018 Mark Butler Art Prize; awarded to selected artworks exhibited within his electorate.

It won First Prize ($500), awarded on the 7th September 2018.
